Park City's new Alpine Distilling sells single-malt whiskeys, but it also promotes peace of mind, making keychain breath analyzers available for purchase.

The sleek, small devices, designed to quickly and accurately determine blood alcohol content, could come in handy now that Utah's drunken-driving limit is the nation's lowest.

Last week, Gov. Gary Herbert signed into law a controversial measure that made Utah the first state to lower the blood alcohol limit to be legally drunk while driving from 0.08 to 0.05. The law takes effect Dec. 30, 2018, and Herbert has said he plans to call a special session so lawmakers can tweak concerns about the law.

"We hope that having these devices makes it easier to be safe, law-abiding citizens, regardless of what the legal limit is," Alpine Distilling owner Rob Sergent said in a news release announcing that the company has become a local distributor of BACtrack Go breath analyzers. "They certainly offer some peace of mind for those just looking to enjoy an evening out."

Alpine Distilling, one of Utah's newest distillers, sells two versions of its Travelers Rest American Single Malt whiskeys at its Park City distillery store, 7132 N. Silver Creek Road.

The 88 proof version is a rich, nutty whiskey aged in Missouri oak barrels; the Barrel Proof rests in former Jack Daniels barrels for less than two years, providing a chocolaty, sweet Scotch whisky cq flavor. A 750ml bottle of Barrel Proof sells for $74, the 88 Proof costs $49 and the breath analyzer keychains are $29.99.

Customers can shop at the store Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
